BIPOC Cultural Showcase
In collaboration with the African-Caribbean Student’s Association, we are proud to announce the BIPOC Cultural Showcase! Join us in celebrating the colourful and lively diversity of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour’s cultures in our community. There will be live performances, music, local cuisine, local art, and a curated fashion highlighting local BIPOC designers.

Biracial Folks & Interracial Adoptees Conversation
Folks who self-identify as Biracial and/or interracial adoptees are invited to a private conversation on March 10th at 5pm in the SUB. Community members are welcome. The purpose of this event is to network and start a conversation on topics affecting biracial and/or interracial adoptees. Register here.
Black History Month Film Series
In celebration of Black History Month, the Students of Colour Collective presents a four-night film exploration of African-American identity. Each film will be followed by a short informal discussion. We will watch 13TH, Dark Girls, Moonlight, and Race: Power of an Illusion.

Stories of Colour Event
This Stories of Colour event is inspired by Humans of New York! On the 23rd of November, we will be merging storytelling and photography! Join us in the Student Union Building for an evening of games, community, photography, and storytelling.
BIPOC folks will have their portrait taken by Cheiyenne, Events Rep, and have the opportunity to share their experiences/stories. While you wait, you can play games or mingle with friends!

Know Your Tenancy Rights
The third workshop in the Surviving the System workshop will be focusing on tenancy rights led by articled students at the Law Centre, Lisa Harris and Laura Bullock. This workshop will cover some of the rights that the Tenancy Act provides for folks who are renting, and will also be a space for you to ask questions about your tenant rights. This session will cover a variety of tenancy topics, including: what your rights are when you are engaging with your landlord, what notice is required under the Tenancy Act, what your rights are around renoviction, and potential pathways to address racial profiling relating to tenancy. Health Care Justice
Medical clinics and hospitals should be places where everyone receives supportive, non-judgmental, comprehensive medical care. Unfortunately, for BIPOC folks, this is not always the case. BIPOC students are invited to join us on November 16 at 5pm on Zoom for the second workshop in the Surviving the System series. Queens University Assistant Professor will be leading this workshop and discussing medical racism, how Canadian law facilitates medical racism and what advocates are doing to combat it. Anti-Asian Racism
An online interactive conversation centering Asian voices and focusing on the various experiences people of Asian descent face to this day. You will learn about the history of anti-Asian racism in Canada, the model minority myth, how to appropriately show up for the Asian community, and more! This session will be led by Charis and Thanh Tazumi.

PSIs & BIPOC Mental Health
BIPOC students are invited to our upcoming workshop where we will be discussing the impact of racial oppression on mental health at post-secondary institutions. There will be a group therapeutic process and we will go over empowerment strategies to cope such as: radical self-love, community support, and solidarity. Dismantling Performative Allyship
SOCC is excited to host a panel discussion with the advocacy group No White Saviors, in collaboration with SOVI-BCCIC, dedicated to teaching folks how to dismantle the white savior complex and avoid performative allyship. Story telling Event
You are invited to our storytelling event on March 4th at 6pm! Storytelling is therapeutic and can be used to inspire and connect with others. This event will be a workshop facilitated by SOCC’s event rep, Zuzu, followed by a story telling circle! You can register to just participate in the workshop or you can sign up as one of our storytellers and win some amazing prizes made by local Indigenous artists!

Movie Night
When telling Black stories, it is important to go beyond stories of trauma, slavery, and colonization. While these aspects of our history and present lives shouldn't be ignored, we also want to share stories of hope and inspiration. 'The boy who harnessed the wind' tells the true story of a Malawian, William, who despite being kicked out of school because his parents couldn't afford the tuition, managed to build a windmill for his community so they could survive a famine. William Kamkwamba is now an author and inventor.
Dance Like Everybody’s Watching
This screening will expose viewers to the lives of three Black dancers in Victoria as they grapple with tokenism, racism and stereotypes. Following the screening, one of the dancers, Simone Blaise, will lead a discussion on topics such as racism, diversity, and cultural appropriation
Understanding Black Identity
UVic Professor Moustapha Fall will lead a talk on understanding Black identity in the context of Canadian mainstream culture followed by a Q&A.
BHM Presentation
This presentation will cover why we celebrate Black history month with a focus on Canadian Black history. Dominique Jacobs will lead the presentation followed by a Q&A.
